When an employee becomes ill, they can receive compensation from several different sources. As the employer, you pay out sick pay and Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency pays out sickness benefit and sickness compensation. The collectively agreed health insurance provides supplementary compensation.

When an employee becomes ill, you as the employer have a few matters to deal with, regardless of how long they are away from work. The checklists help you not to miss anything.
Blue collar workers
Checklist if a blue collar worker gets ill
Days 1–14 Make a qualifying deduction equivalent to 20% of the average sick pay per week. The qualifying deduction can be calculated in various ways, depending on which collective agreement your company is covered by. Then pay sick pay at 80% of the salary and any other employment benefits. Remember to make a note of the date on which the employee became ill. Day 8, you must receive a doctor’s certificate from the employee. If reasons exist, you can request this from the first day. When the employee has been away from work for more than 14 days, you no longer need to pay sick pay. Instead, you have to report the employee as sick to Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency. They will then pay out sickness benefit. When the employee has passed 15 days of sickness absence, they need to apply in person for compensation from Avtalsgruppsjukförsäkring (AGS), Group sickness insurance. They do this via Afa Försäkring, a Swedish insurance company. If you want, you as the employer can make an application on behalf of the employee. The occupational pension you have taken out for blue collar workers who work for you, Avtalspension SAF-LO, Occupational pension, includes a feature called waiver of premium insurance. For your part, this means that the company pays a lower or no premiums at all, for example when the employee is on sick leave. It is not necessary to make a separate application for waiver of premium insurance. On day 30 at the latest, you have to draw up a plan for how your employee should return to work, if it appears that they are going to be away for more than 60 days. Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency has information regarding your responsibilities when it comes to rehabilitation and the prevention of illness. Read through this information, and feel free to use Försäkringskassan’s template to draw up a plan for your employee. As an employer, you can receive compensation for up to half the cost when an employed blue collar worker undergoes work-oriented rehabilitation. Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency offers employers various grants and support, for example workplace-oriented rehabilitation support. Employees whose working capacity is reduced due to illness, injury or disability, and who in all likelihood will never be able to work full-time or part-time, can receive sickness compensation from Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency. If the employee receives sickness compensation, they can also apply for compensation from Avtalsgruppsjukförsäkring (AGS), Group sickness insurance. Applications must be submitted to Afa Försäkring.
White collar workers

When an employee has been sick for 90 consecutive days, or over 105 days within twelve months, they may be entitled to ITP sickness benefits. As an employer, you should report this to Collectum. When approved Alecta will then handle the payments to the employee.
