When a child is born or adopted into an employee’s family, there are a few things you need to check. We will help you to figure out what applies using these checklists.
Blue collar workers
Checklist if a blue collar worker is to take parental leave
Tell your employee about Föräldrapenningtillägg (FPT), Parental benefit supplement, to which they are entitled through the collective agreement. The insurance provides extra money to the employee during their parental leave. Talk to your employee and jointly plan when the parental leave is to start and finish. Föräldrapenningtillägg (FPT), Parental benefit supplement, will be paid out during a continuous period of leave. It is therefore important to plan which parental leave period the application applies to. The employee applies in person for Föräldrapenningtillägg (FPT) from Afa Försäkring, a Swedish insurance company, and for parental benefit from Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency. When the employee has applied for compensation from Föräldrapenningtillägg, you as the employer have to confirm to Afa Försäkring that the person works for you. The information at Afa Försäkring is only available in Swedish. As the employer, you do not pay any premiums into the employee’s occupational pension insurance during parental leave or in the event of pregnancy benefit. When the employee applies for Föräldrapenningtillägg (FPT), Parental benefit supplement, they apply automatically for the payment to their pension from the waiver of premium insurance. If the employee does not apply for Föräldrapenningtillägg (FPT) they must apply for payment to their pension from the waiver of premium insurance at Afa Försäkring. You need to report the salary you paid to the employee to Fora as usual.
Remember that starting from 2024, Fora introduces monthly reporting for workers.
White collar workers
Checklist if a white collar worker is to take parental leave
For white collar workers with insurance ITP 1:
Talk to your the employee and draw up a plan, including the start and finish dates for the parental leave.
Continue reporting to Collectum the gross monthly salary you pay your employee. You have to do this, even if the salary is SEK 0. Note! You consequently should not deregister the employee with Collectum when they are on parental leave.
As the employer, you do not pay money into your employee’s pension during their absence. The premium for ITP 1 is paid automatically through the waiver of premium insurance when the employee is receiving parental benefit or temporary parental benefit from Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency. This applies both during parental leave and in the event of care of a sick child (VAB).
Remind the employee to apply for parental benefit from Försäkringskassan, The Social Insurance Agency.
According to most collective agreements for white collar workers, the employer has to pay parental pay, which provides the employee with additional money during parental leave. Check with your trade union or employers’ association to see what applies to your company.
For white collar workers with insurance ITP 2:
Talk to your employee and draw up a plan, including the start and finish dates for the parental leave.
You have no obligation to pay money into the employee’s pension during the parental leave, but the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise and PTK, The council for negotiation and cooperation recommend that you should do so for 11 months. Report to Collectum if you are not going to pay. This information is only available in Swedish at collectum.se.
Remind the employee to apply for parental benefit from Försäkringskassan.
