Disability pension

If you need to be away from work due to illness, you will initially receive sick pay from your employer. If you are ill for more than two weeks you will receive sickness benefit from Försäkringskassan, the Social Insurance Agency.

If you are ill for a longer period, and are over 18, you will receive extra compensation called ITP sjukpension which is a disability pension. This is included in your ITP occupational pension and depends on how much you earn.

To be entitled to a disability pension from ITP, you should:

  • be over 18 and have ITP
  • be at least 25% sick listed
  • have been on the sick list for more than 90 consecutive days or have been on the sick list for more than 105 days in different periods over the last 12 months
  • be receiving sickness compensation or activity compensation from Försäkringskassan.

You still have ITP, even if you are sick

Premium payments will not cease for your ITP if you are ill for a long period of time. Payments will be made exactly as before, which means that your ITP retirement pension will increase exactly as it would if you were working.

This is how disability pension is calculated
